Dr. Patricia McGaughey is assistant professor in the School of Nursing. She holds a PhD from NYU’s School of Global Public Health, an MSN from Yale University School of Nursing and a BA in Biology (with a Spanish Minor) from Eureka College.
Dr. McGaughey's research examines the role of organizational factors in prenatal care and their connection to rates of preterm birth among women with low incomes and of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. A Certified Nurse-Midwife fluent in Spanish and with nearly 15 years’ clinical experience, Dr. McGaughey provides intrapartum care at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. For her dissertation at NYU, she used data from New York Medicaid administrative claims and from the US Census Bureau’s American Community Survey to identify variation in the use of evidence-based practice, and preterm birth rates. Dr. McGaughey is building a translational research network to further her studies of disparities in consequential perinatal outcomes.
Dr. McGaughey has taught undergraduate and graduate courses on healthcare policy, management, and leadership. Clinically, she has trained students from midwifery, nurse-practitioner, nursing, and medical programs, including Harvard, Rutgers and Yale University.
