Homes are not seen as safe, nature is seen as a dark force, and relationships never thrive. The women need to negotiate the separate spheres between domestic and public, while the men are burdened by the world of commerce in the rural landscapes and in the encroaching cityscape, and the children cannot find solace at home, at work, or at play. There is no nostalgia for the past. Many chapters end with the death and burial of a protagonist and with the ghost of the departed returning in a truly grotesque manner.",
