N2 - Software design inspections are an effective method for identifying defects in software design artifacts, thereby achieving a high quality of software. These inspections rely on the relevant experience of the software designers and checklists that are created from past inspections and software failures. The Software Design Error Taxonomy (SDET) [1, 2] provides a framework that can be leveraged to aid software design inspections by software professionals. This paper aims to compare inspections that focus on identifying faults/defects based on the root cause of traditional ad-hoc inspections that rely on past experiences and historical data. The authors conducted an empirical study to compare error-based inspection using SDET and traditional ad-hoc inspection techniques to formulate an opinion. Findings reveal that the subjects who leveraged SDET detected more faults due to the focus on the underlying root cause. This experiment provides evidence of the usefulness and effectiveness of the SDET framework as a software design inspection tool.
