Abstract
High-quality sex education is vital to sexual health and overall well-being. When taught by well-trained teachers in grades K-12, with support from parents and the community, age- and developmentally-appropriate sex education provides critically important knowledge, skills, and attitudes that enable young people to achieve and maintain sexual health into adulthood and throughout their lives. Good sex education empowers learners to have healthy relationships, make wellinformed decisions about their sexual health, seek out reliable, accurate information about sex and sexuality, appreciate and love themselves for who they are, and treat others—especially those who are marginalized—with dignity and respect. Rigorous, well-designed research can evaluate the outcomes of different approaches to sex education and determine what works best, for whom, and under what circumstances.
