Abstract

I examined the perseverance in problem-solving of 30 secondary students as they engaged with challenging mathematical tasks over six weeks. Their perseverance improved, primarily due to consistent opportunities to record their conceptual thinking at the outset of their engagement. These artifacts of their thinking often helped prolong their productive efforts upon impasse and improved their selection of problem-solving strategies and affect regulation.
