Mapping Multilingual Futures: An Introduction to the Themed Issue on Forging Inclusive Schools for Multilingual Learners

Research output: Contribution to journalEditorial

Abstract

This introduction to the themed issue establishes that hegemonic monolingualism in the United States and Europe has fostered segregation of multilingual students in schools. With a focus on the possibilities and opportunities for multilingual learner inclusion, this themed issue draws attention to the agency of educators and students, organizational arrangements, pedagogical practices, and technologies that have the potential to transform, resist, and/or mitigate the harms of monolingual policies and practices that have historically segregated multilingual learners. We provide an overview of each article in the themed issue and synthesize what they collectively teach practitioners, policymakers, and researchers about how to forge multilingual futures in schools.
