Abstract
The diffusion of breakthrough technologies depends not only on technical readiness but also on societal preparedness, shaped by cultural narratives, social norms, and collective imagination. Drawing on the historical patterns, this article illustrates how curiosity-driven pioneers catalyzed social adoption despite uncertainty, a principle mirrored in modern technology diffusion. Innovations such as AI, humanoid robots, and self-driving vehicles face resistance not because of technical limitations but due to cognitive constraints, most people cannot easily visualize radically different futures. Social narratives, media representations, and trusted endorsements act as critical infrastructure, reducing uncertainty and normalizing adoption. Cross-cultural differences in AI acceptance highlight the role of storytelling. Optimistic narratives in East Asia foster adoption, while dystopian narratives in the U.S. inhibit it. Effective diffusion requires deliberate social strategy, including visualization, social proof, and repeated exposure. Understanding and shaping these narratives is as crucial as engineering advances in achieving widespread technological adoption.
