Teaching, Care, and Inclusive Education: a disability studies perspective

This essay describes how the global project of inclusive education may be advanced by considering how ethics of care and understandings about care labor can inform schools. Implications for educators seeking to adopt a disability studies orientation to inclusive educational practice through a lens of care include focusing on caring as a definable set of actions and attitudes focused on justice, rather than a personal trait. Creating collective access specifically draws from the wisdom of disabled people to emphasize the capability of the community to name situated needs and collectively identify and enact accessibility and inclusivity.
