Abstract

James Lawrence is best remembered for uttering "Don't give up the ship," before expiring in the War of 1812. Less well known, but equally memorable, were the Federalist and Republican attempts to claim the dead Lawrence's mantle for themselves. Dead war heroes became grist for partisan mills in the maelstrom of early republic politics.
