Abstract

The increase in the number of gaming facilities, sports betting, and online betting services could worsen the decline in financial performance of greyhound racing in the state of Florida. The premise of this study was to link how the presence of the state lottery and casinos has had an effect on the number of fans and the handle at greyhound tracks and other pari-mutuel facilities. The increased online betting and sports betting may have an additional effect on attendance and survival of these facilities. The findings suggest that an increase in the growth of other gaming venues along with sports betting and online betting services could have an increasing negative effect on the number of fans and the amount of the handle in the greyhound tracks of Florida.
