THE INEXTRICABLE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MARGINALIZATION AND ADDICTION: BRIDGING THE GAP THROUGH CHARTING

This chapter presents homework/activity that focuses on addiction, broadly defined, as it relates to sexual, gender, and affectional identity. Individuals from the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) population may experience stigma from their coming-out process and sexual-, affectional-, and gender-identity development. Numerous researchers have documented a significant relationship between heterosexism and substance use. Cognitive-behavioral therapy, according to Sosin and Rockinson-Szapkiw, is an approach to counseling that is both present-centered and solution-focused. The homework/activity chart can be used in individual, couples, or group therapy. This homework/activity is designed to document clients’ addictive behaviors and the positive and negative events associated with their sexual, gender, or affectional identity, which can be processed and further explored in session. This homework/activity is designed for clients who are currently experiencing addictive behaviors and struggling with their sexual, gender, or affectional identity.
