The Role of Creativity in Teaching Mathematics Online

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter reports on the role of creativity in the transition to online teaching and learning prompted by the pandemic. A course called Creative Thinking through Mathematics, a general education mathematics course designed for non-mathematics and nonscience majors, served as a context for the study. Seven instructors of the course were interviewed and surveyed to determine how a course that sought to encourage students to see the connections between mathematics and creativity promoted creative teaching and learning in an online environment. The findings are presented relative to the constraints and affordances of the online environment that encouraged creativity in the instructors and on the course features that were conducive to the transition. Implications for other mathematics courses and for future research are suggested.
