Abstract
Parents are integral aspects of their children’s psychoeducational experiences, and their support is a critical component of student success. However, research focusing specifically on the unique experiences of the parents of first-generation college students has been scant. Thus, using a qualitative phenomenological approach, the current study explores the experiences of Parents of First-Generation College Students (PFG). Specifically, the current study focused on mothers, and their experiences are examined through semi-structured, individual interviews (N = 10). Three themes emerged across the participants’ experiences–Parental Role Transition, Obstacles for Success, and Knowledge Systems. Results are discussed in terms of their integration with previous research, theory, and opportunities for student and family support.
