WIP: A Pedagogy Study on Human Computer Interaction as a Necessary Foundation for Mobile Application Development

Abstract

This research WIP paper examines the impact of prior Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) knowledge on student performance in mobile application development courses through a controlled experimental design. Two student groups, one with HCI exposure and one without, were assessed within identical learning environments. Results from both quantitative and qualitative analyses indicate that prior HCI knowledge significantly enhances design thinking, interface clarity, navigation logic, cognitive efficiency, and user-centered development. These effects were consistent across undergraduate and graduate levels. The findings highlight HCI's role in cultivating critical skills for mobile app development and support its structured inclusion in computing curricula. This study offers practical implications for educators and contributes to ongoing efforts to enhance computer science education.
